Historical Background of Ajegunle
The area began developing in the 1940s and 1950s, during the colonial era, when Lagos started expanding rapidly due to increasing commercial activities around Apapa Wharf and the Lagos Ports. Workers, artisans, and migrants from different parts of Nigeria especially the Yoruba, Igbo, and Ijaw ethnic groups settled there because of its proximity to the ports and industries.
By the 1960s and 1970s, Ajegunle had become one of the most densely populated and culturally diverse communities in Lagos. It earned a reputation as a place where people from humble beginnings could thrive through hard work and talent. Despite being known as a slum area, it developed a strong community spirit and became famous for producing some of Nigeria’s most influential musicians, footballers, and entertainers.
In the 1990s, Ajegunle gained national recognition through its music scene particularly the rise of the Ajegunle Sound, a mix of reggae, galala, and Afrobeat styles pioneered by artists like Daddy Showkey, Daddy Fresh, and Baba Fryo. This period cemented Ajegunle’s image as a cultural powerhouse within Lagos.
