History Of Badagry
Badagry is one of the oldest towns in Lagos State and holds a significant place in Nigeria’s pre colonial and colonial history. The town is historically known as a major slave port during the trans Atlantic slave trade, serving as a departure point for enslaved Africans sent to the Americas. This dark chapter is commemorated today at landmarks like the Point of No Return and the Seriki Abass Slave Museum, which preserve the memory of those who suffered during this period.
Founded by Ogu people, Badagry became an important trading post in the 15th and 16th centuries, facilitating commerce between local communities and European traders. The town also witnessed early missionary activities; for example, Christianity was introduced here in the 19th century, and some of Nigeria’s earliest churches and schools were established in Badagry.
