a). Apapa Wharf Area – used for loading and offloading goods coming from ships across the lagoon.

b). Oyingbo/Ebute Metta Wharf – used mainly by local traders and ferries connecting Lagos Island and the mainland.

c). Ijora Wharf Area – serving both traders and missionaries transporting goods inland

Ebute Metta became one of the first organized mainland settlements in Lagos and played a crucial role in Nigeria’s early civil service development. Many of the Egba settlers became engineers, technicians, and stationmasters under the Nigerian Railway Corporation, which established its headquarters in the neighborhood. This connection made Ebute Metta the birthplace of Nigeria’s railway industry and a key hub for national transportation.

In June 2021, this historical link to transport was upgraded with the commissioning of the Mobolaji Johnson Railway Station, also known as the Ebute Metta Station. With a capacity to hold up to 6,000 passengers, it is the largest train station in West Africa. The project, inaugurated by President Muhammadu Buhari, marked a major milestone in Nigeria’s railway modernization and reaffirmed Ebute Metta’s status as a transportation landmark.
