Iganmu, Orile, Coker; Location, Area Guide, Leisure and Shopping, Schools, Apartments and Properties
Orile Iganmu is a densely populated, strategically located in Lagos Mainland under under Orile Iganmu LCDA, which belongs to Apapa LGA in Lagos State. along the Badagry Apapa expressway that functions as both a major transport interchange and a commercial/industrial hub best known for busy spare parts, building materials and small scale industrial markets.
Orile Iganmu takes its name from two Yoruba words: Orile, meaning “origin” or “homestead,” and Iganmu, meaning “swampy land.” This reflects its early beginnings as a marshy settlement on the Lagos Mainland. In its earliest days, Orile-Iganmu served as a resting and trading point along the route connecting Badagry, an important slave trade and later commercial town, to central Lagos (Isale-Eko). Its position made it naturally attractive for settlers, traders, and artisans.
During the colonial era, the community gained importance because of its closeness to Apapa Wharf and the railway lines, which were major routes for transporting goods. Many workers, migrants, and artisans moved into the area, establishing the foundation of the bustling neighborhood it is today.
The post independence years, particularly between the 1960s and 1980s, marked rapid development in Orile-Iganmu. The most iconic addition was the National Arts Theatre, completed in 1976, which became a symbol of Nigeria’s cultural identity and remains the area’s most famous landmark. Around this time, Orile also grew into a hub for transport and commerce, with large spare parts markets, small-scale industries, and an industrial layout. The influx of people seeking work and affordable housing, however, led to overcrowding and the spread of informal housing structures.
🎭 Orile Iganmu and FESTAC ’77
The Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC ’77) was held in Lagos, Nigeria, from January to February 1977. It was a massive cultural festival that brought together artists, musicians, writers, and performers from across Africa and the African diaspora.
The main venue of the festival was the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Orile. This iconic building was constructed specifically for the event, designed in the shape of a military cap, and it became the centerpiece of Nigeria’s cultural pride. Orile Iganmu was therefore placed on the world map during FESTAC ’77, as thousands of visitors, dignitaries, and international participants converged on the community.
