Mercy Ozioma Johnson Okojie was born on 28 August 1984 in Lagos, Nigeria, into the family of Daniel Johnson, a former naval officer, and his wife Elizabeth. She is the fourth child in a family of seven children and a native of Okene in Kogi State.
