    Frequent Asked Questions

    a) What happens if I skip NYSC: NYSC is mandatory for Nigerian graduates under 30. Skipping it without an exemption could disqualify you from certain jobs or positions in Nigeria.

    b) Can I redeploy: Redeployment is allowed on health, marital, or security grounds.

    c) Can part-time students participate: No. Part-time graduates receive exemption certificates.

Smart Tips for Accommodation and Feeding

When you get to the NYSC orientation camp, you’ll be staying in gender-segregated dormitories with bunk beds. They can get a bit crowded, so it’s wise to come prepared with things like a bedsheet or sleeping bag, pillow, mosquito net, padlock, and toiletries. Meals are served three times a day, but the quality can be hit or miss, which is why many people grab extra food or snacks from the mammy market so having a little extra cash on hand is helpful.

After camp, at your Place of Primary Assignment (PPA), the situation depends on where you’re posted. Some schools or organizations will give you a place to stay, though it might be pretty basic. If they don’t, you’ll need to rent somewhere yourself often with the help of NYSC officials or locals. Feeding is on you during this period, and you’ll rely mostly on your ₦77,000 monthly allowance plus any extra your PPA might offer if you lucky enough.

For Community Development Service (CDS), there’s no housing or feeding provided, so you’ll be using your own resources. The key to managing all this is to budget wisely, try to negotiate for housing support if you can, cook your own meals to save money, and be ready to adapt to whatever living conditions you find.
