Omoyele Sowore was born on February 16, 1971, in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria, a riverine community in the Niger Delta region. He was raised in a large polygamous family as the first child of his father’s 15 or more children. His father, David Omoremilekun Sowore, was a teacher and community organizer known for his strong political beliefs and support for free education, while his mother, Esther Kehinde Sowore, popularly called “EK,” is known for her resilience in raising a large family. Growing up in a modest and challenging environment, Sowore’s early exposure to hardship and inequality played a key role in shaping his outspoken nature and passion for justice.

Sowore attended Community High School in Kiribo and Ofedepe Comprehensive High School in Okitipupa before proceeding to the University of Lagos, where he studied Geography and Planning. While in school, he became actively involved in student unionism and served as Student Union President from 1992 to 1994, gaining national attention for his activism during Nigeria’s military era. Despite facing disciplinary actions, including expulsion, he completed his degree and later earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Columbia University in the United States.
