Oyo State Area Guide; Location, Apartments & Properties, Schools, Estates

Oyo State, popularly known as the Pace Setter State, is one of Nigeria's most historically and culturally significant states. Located in southwestern Nigeria, it was created on February 3, 1976, from the former Western State, with Ibadan serving as its capital. Interestingly, Oyo State originally included presentday Osun State until the latter was created in 1991. The state has 33 Local Government Areas and is home to major cities and towns such as Ibadan, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Iseyin, Saki and Eruwa. Beyond its geographical size, Oyo State is deeply connected to Yoruba history, particularly the ancient Oyo Empire, which played an important role in West African history.

Oyo State offers a rich combination of culture, agriculture, commerce, education and urban development. From the historic palaces and traditional festivals of Oyo town to the busy commercial centres of Ibadan and the agricultural communities of Oke-Ogun, the state offers different lifestyles and economic opportunities. Agriculture remains an important part of its identity, with crops such as cassava, maize, yam and cocoa cultivated across different areas. With its historic towns, educational institutions, growing residential communities and diverse economy, Oyo State remains an important destination for residents, businesses and people exploring real estate opportunities in southwestern Nigeria.

    History of Oyo State, Nigeria

Oyo State was officially created on February 3, 1976, during the military administration of General Murtala Muhammed. Before its creation, the area formed part of Nigeria's former Western Region, which became Western State in 1967. In 1976, the Federal Military Government divided Western State into three states: Oyo, Ogun and Ondo, as part of a nationwide restructuring that increased Nigeria's states from 12 to 19. Ibadan was chosen as the capital of Oyo State, while Brigadier David Medaiyese Jemibewon became its first military governor.

Interestingly, Oyo State was originally much larger than it is today. It included areas such as Osogbo, Ile-Ife and Ilesa, which are now part of Osun State. However, on August 27, 1991, during General Ibrahim Babangida's administration, Osun State was carved out of Oyo State, establishing its present day boundaries. Today, Oyo State comprises 33 Local Government Areas and remains an important centre of Yoruba history, culture, agriculture and commerce. In February 2026, the state celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades since its creation.

These local governments cover major cities, historic towns and rural communities across the state, including Oyo, Ogbomoso, Iseyin, Saki and the wider Ibadan region.
