Rema, whose real name is Divine Joshua Ikubor, was born on May 1, 2000, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. He is from Igbanke in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State. His father was Justice Ikubor, a former politician and businessman who died in 2008, while his mother, Mrs. Ikubor, raised him and his siblings after his father’s death. Rema grew up with an elder brother and two sisters; his elder brother also passed away, leaving Rema as the only surviving son in the family.

Rema attended Ighile Group of Schools in Edo State for his primary and secondary education, where he developed his interest in singing and rapping. He later gained admission to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to study Creative Arts, reportedly partly to fulfil his mother’s wish for him to obtain a university education. However, he did not complete the programme and left the university in 2023.

Rise to Fame

Rema began building his music career in Benin City, performing in church and developing his sound with a group of young musicians. His major breakthrough came in 2018, when he posted a freestyle of D’Prince’s “Gucci Gang” on Instagram. The freestyle went viral and caught D’Prince’s attention, who brought Rema to Lagos and introduced him to Don Jazzy and the Mavin Records team. He subsequently signed with Jonzing World, D’Prince’s label under Mavin Records.

In 2019, Rema released his self titled debut EP, which quickly gained attention in Nigeria. Songs such as Dumebi and Iron Man turned him into one of the country’s fastest rising young artists. Iron Man was later included on Barack Obama’s 2019 summer playlist, giving him international exposure. Relationship

In 2020, Rema became linked to Nimiie (Ifeoluwanimi Ogunjebe) after she won his Ginger Me social media challenge, which led to a date between them. Nimiie later clarified that she was not his girlfriend and that it was their first official meeting.
