Rise of Sir Olu Okeowo’s Business

Sir Olu Okeowo’s success in business is a story of determination, timing, and calculated risk-taking.

He first ventured into metal fabrication, producing security doors, gates, and other steel works for residential use. His hands on approach, combined with an eye for quality, gradually earned him trust among Lagos property developers and homeowners. With these small contracts, he built relationships and gathered capital, reinvesting every profit into scaling up his work.

By the early 1990s, Okeowo formally registered Gibraltar Construction Nigeria Limited. He strategically positioned the company to handle luxury construction projects a niche that was still relatively untapped in Nigeria at the time. Instead of focusing on mass housing, he targeted the wealthy elite in Lagos who demanded high quality, modern, and secure homes.

His big break came when he began delivering bespoke luxury residences in Ikoyi, Victoria Island, and Lekki, areas that later became Nigeria’s most sought after real estate zones. His reputation grew because he combined engineering precision with European inspired architectural designs, a reflection of his time abroad. As demand grew, Gibraltar Construction expanded, completing over 1,200 projects across 12 states, ranging from luxury private homes to commercial developments.
