VeryDarkMan Biography: Full Name, Family, Activism, Ratel, Controversies | Martins Vincent Otse Initiative
Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), is a Nigerian social media activist born on April 8, 1994, in Kaduna, though originally from Agenebode in Edo State. his father was reported to be a mechanic, while his mother engaged in small scale business activities to support the household. His upbringing in Kaduna exposed him to both the struggles of everyday Nigerians and the resilience required to navigate life in a working class environment.
These early life experiences shaped his outspoken nature, giving him firsthand insight into poverty, social injustice, and the importance of speaking out for ordinary people. (it’s unclear whether he actually attended or graduated from the University).
Activism Journey
VeryDarkMan’s journey into activism began around 2022, when he started posting bold, unfiltered commentaries on social media about corruption, consumer exploitation, and social injustice in Nigeria. He first gained traction by exposing fraudulent skincare brands and online scams, which earned him recognition as a fearless digital watchdog. His ability to say what many Nigerians felt but were afraid to voice made him stand out in the crowded social media space.
By 2023, his influence had grown rapidly, and he caught the attention of celebrities and the public alike. A major turning point came when Davido followed and endorsed him on Instagram, signaling mainstream recognition of his voice as a people’s advocate. This endorsement helped broaden his reach and solidify his role as an activist rather than just another content creator.
In 2024, his impact was officially recognized when he was nominated for the Silverbird Most Influential Social Media Influencer of the Year. At this stage, VDM had built a reputation as a “digital vigilante,” constantly calling out political leaders, entertainers, and businesses for corruption, abuse of power, or dishonesty.
Despite his rising fame, his activism attracted controversy. He was arrested multiple times in 2024 and 2025 on allegations ranging from cyberbullying to defamation, and even during a public protest against a Nigerian bank over deductions from his mother’s account. These incidents, while controversial, only amplified his presence as he became a symbol of resistance against attempts to silence outspoken critics in Nigeria.
Martins Vincent Otse Initiative (The NGO)
In October 2024, Nigerian activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), launched the Martins Vincent Otse Initiative, a non governmental organization aimed at addressing critical challenges in public education and community development across Nigeria. Within the first 24 hours, the initiative raised an impressive ₦33–35 million, largely driven by supporter goodwill and the activism’s credibility. Music icon Don Jazzy became a major benefactor, contributing ₦100 million to the cause
The NGO’s mission centers on empowering underserved students by integrating modern technologies and innovative teaching methods such as artificial intelligence into public education. VDM has also proposed deploying NYSC members as teachers in public schools to invigorate the teaching workforce
Shortly after its launch, VDM’s initiative introduced an online app and website intended to enhance transparency by providing real time updates on donations and expenditures. However, in December 2024, he caused a public stir by claiming the NGO had been hacked, resulting in a ₦180 million theft, of which only ₦20 million remained a scenario he described as a shocking breach.
A few days later, VDM revealed that the entire account theft episode was actually a deliberate prank a social experiment designed to expose how quickly misinformation spreads on social media. He emphasized the lack of critical scrutiny from the public and said he staged the event to show how easily people accept online claims without verification. Moving forward, the NGO took steps to solidify its structures. In July 2025, VDM unveiled a nearly completed new office space for the initiative, describing it as a community hub where people can formally lodge complaints and the NGO team can plan outreach projects like drilling boreholes in a centralized and organized manner.
Ratel: Fearless Resistance (The 4th Arm of Government)
The word Ratel is another name for the honey badger, a small but incredibly tough animal found in Africa and parts of Asia. Despite its size, the ratel is widely regarded as one of the most fearless creatures in the animal kingdom, known for taking on predators much larger than itself and surviving harsh conditions. Beyond its literal meaning, “Ratel” has come to symbolize resilience, fearlessness, and defiance against overwhelming odds. This deep symbolism explains why VeryDarkMan adopted it as a core identity for his movement. By calling his community the Ratel Nation (The 4th Arm of Government), he aligns himself and his followers with the honey badger’s spirit unyielding, bold, and unafraid to confront bigger powers. In essence, “Ratel” represents a mindset of courage, persistence, and refusal to be silenced, which mirrors VDM’s approach to activism and social justice.
Controversies: The Ratel Against the System
Multiple Arrests and Bail Releases
VDM was arrested on cyberstalking charges involving allegations against the police and celebrities like Iyabo Ojo and Tonto Dikeh. He pleaded not guilty and was remanded but eventually granted bail and released after nearly three weeks.
Ongoing Defamation Lawsuits
VDM was summoned to court over mercy chinwo case and later had a bench warrant issued for failing to appear in court over defamation allegations. The matter is still pending; no court verdict has been reached yet.
Mohbad’s Death Case
- In 2023, following the sudden and controversial death of singer Mohbad, VDM emerged as one of the loudest voices demanding justice. He used his platform to call out alleged industry bullies and pressed for transparency in the investigation. While he was not directly taken to court over this, his outspoken stance drew both support and backlash, positioning him at the center of the push to uncover the truth behind Mohbad’s death.
Wife, and Children
