History of Victoria Island (VI)

Victoria Island was originally a low lying island surrounded by swamp and lagoon, inhabited by fishing communities long before modern development began. The Oniru chieftaincy family originally owned much of Victoria Island. In 1948, the Lagos Executive Development Board compensated them with £250,000 for the land and an additional £150,000 for the destruction of sacred shrines. As a result, the original residents were relocated to Maroko Village.
